NY – School of Health Geography & Urban Health

The international concept of “Geonight” (in French Nuit de la Géographie) was proposed by the International Geographical Union (IGU) and the Association of Geographical Societies in Europe (EUGEO). Launched in 2017, Geography Night is a global and annual event which aims to promote geography and raise awareness among the general public of the importance of geography.

During this night, conferences, screenings, exhibitions and educational activities are organized in different cities around the world. In Cameroon, this concept program will be organized by the Nguendo-Yongsi School of Health Geography & Urban Health. This “Night of Geography” will be a friendly event, free and open to the general public, around geography (health) and its productions.

As part of the Nguendo-Yongsi School of Health Geography & Urban Health, the objective will be to better publicize and highlight health geography and Cameroonian/African health geographers, and to make research in discovering the world through the eyes of the geographer. To this end, the various events offered are, as far as possible, free and open to the general public, and hosted in a spirit of openness and conviviality. The events are orientated to geographers in higher and secondary education, students, associations, institutional and professional stakeholders, and more generally to all people interested in geography!

The (health) geography and urban health night will be made up of various events. The events take place in the evening and at night, to welcome a varied and not just academic audience, and to emphasize the unusual, sometimes playful, and undoubtedly little-known aspects of geography. Depending on the cities and organizing associations, events take place indoors (workshops, exhibitions, tours, conferences, etc.) and/or outdoors: nighttime, geographical, diverse, and unexpected urban walks. Indoor events allow a varied audience to meet in the same place and discuss extremely varied workshops, from the most academic (conferences, free debates, etc.) to the most convivial: tastings, multi-sensory tours, performances in the space engaging the public… Geography (of health) is presented in its most diverse aspects, from geographic information systems with the use of high-performance software, to the presentation of unexpected professions, etc. Night walks allow you to discover an aspect that is often overlooked and yet is the basis of geography professions: field excursions, in all their variety. Analysis of perceptions and representations, field surveys, creation of sketches, collection of testimonies, photographic journey… all the senses are mobilized, and the understanding of the place’s changes under participants’ gaze!

The Nguendo-Yongsi School of Health Geography & Urban Health is the promoter of the idea and the general coordinator, but the spirit isdecentralized, and organization of local events is entirely the responsibility (logistical and financial) of the scholars, institutions, and associations concerned. The principle is to encourage emergence of local initiatives, to rely on the richness and variety of ideas from organizations, institutions, student associations, teachers and researchers’ networks of, or other geography enthusiasts.

2024 Health Geo & Urban Health Edition

Staying in the spirit of the concept, the 2024 Geography Night was divided into two moments. First, from 7 p.m., the HeGeo-UH Community went to discover an unusual, surprising, original geography, thanks to a diverse provision of activities, presentations, competitions, exhibitions, screenings and concerts, around different aspects, and geographical themes. Then, from 10:00 pm, the “casual night owls” took part in several unexpected nighttime urban walks, in order to discover the city from a new perspective.
